Design and Modeling

When I was organizing some old pictures from BA, I found these set of interesting photos that took “professionally” by us. We as design students first trying to make something from imagination, can’t afford a real model, so that’s why I was wearing it and trying to take pics. Instead, I made some funny poses and make everybody laughed.

Although that simple dress took the 4 of us 3 days and nights, it was still a good memory. That’s the first time we learn how to fit in the industry, and without tutorials, our tutors let us just do what we think will be right. The dress was designed for a Hongkong actress, it’s a very vintage and simple dress. I love those detail pictures, although it’s very “not well-made”. Funny thing is I can see so many rubbish factor in those pictures, like the bad make up, lame shoes and accessories, unfitted hair style ,,, but i did learn a lot from the process.

PS: This dress and photograph was a group working outcome πŸ™‚

Fabric choosing (BA)

There’s a good thing to live in Guangzhou, China, is the massive resource of fabric and materials for fashion design. The “wonderland” in Chinese is called δΈε€§ε›½ι™…θ½»ηΊΊεŸŽ. It took me nearly a week to get the right fabric because the market is so big, and not a lot of fabric shop do small order like I did. I bought each of the swimming suit fabric for 12 meters, and 16 meters for red silk fabric. This is a fun and hard process, I get up 7 in the morning, catch the bus, get to the market and select all kinds of fabric. Normally they won’t tell me the price because I’m a student, so I have to pretend that I’m working in a company πŸ˜€
Any way, the digital print of the lion is my main inspiration picture, so I use it as print for main design. At the same time, I choose similar colour fabric to go with it.I really love how the red silk look, it’s also digital print fabric, especially when I put it in the model, the natural textile and colour feels really expensive and creative. If it’s now, I will make a better use of it.

Paper pattern (Jacket)

For making fit jacket, the good way to achieve is to draw paper pattern by ourselves. because unless the mannequin is made exactly like your body shape, paper pattern is the most economic way to do. Thanks to the technique of drawing that I’ve learnt few years ago, I managed to make some well fitness garment pieces by making paper patterns.

Although the paper pattern pictures are all in Chinese ( because I draw these when I was still in China doing Fashion design BA ) but the principle is the same, size of the clothes can see on the right : like 175/94A . The thick black line is for cutting line but should be added for at least 1cm of sewing space.

This is a technique that helps me a lot when I’m doing MA course, because as a student I can’t affort to buy my own mannequin and the other mannequins at school are all got different sizes ( for different brand they make the same size differently). The outcome was very good and it only needed a little bit of changing when doing the final pieces

Proper T-shirt making

This is the very first T-shirt that I’ve made few years ago, from design, finding material, paper pattern drawing, fabric cutting, ironing, sewing till finishing details. Β It was such a pain when it comes to the sleeves, neck line, collar, and the bottom stitch line. I was too silly not to consider about how to make it easier, I just choose the fabric I wanted the most, which was a stripe fabric. It has to be perfect when goes to stripe print, I still remember it must be more than 4 times that I redo the shirt all over again only because the stripe won’t go right.

Everytime I feel making one kind of garment is easy and when I actually goes to the making process, it just never go simply as what I’ve expect :)and that’s how I learn to treat every piece of garment thoughtfully.

Chinese painting & pattern design

Sorry for keep posting the old stuff that I’ve done years ago, its only because the deadline is coming and I really don’t have time to sit down and write a nice blog with a cup of coffee and chocolate (oh,that sounds so good).

First is a Chinese old fashion painting, the paints are totally different from the stuff that I usually use, so it take me quite a long time to practice and get used to it. It’s not only because the painting process hard, the paper is also a time killer. before starting we need to use some rice soup to wet it and dry it for three times, then it’s the outline of the painting which is a lotus here, then it’s every layer of the painting, different colour has to wait till the front one to get dried. After finishing the whole painting we also need to use special glue, get three layers of paper and newspaper, wet it and dry it for several times on a table, till it can be completely take off without hurting the paints. One step is wrong then the whole painting will be ruined. It’s quite a challenge to be honest πŸ™‚

Then it’s the pattern design, I have to admit I’m not good at the delicate pattern cuz I don’t have enough patience to sit there and draw the same thing over and over again. Still drawing by hand is fun, and I always think human’s hands are better than cold computers (unless I can use PS and ArtRage like a real concept artist, ha)
